Meat Ball Curry (Caril de Almondegas de Carne)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef, ground
  • 1 tbsp Bengal gram flour (besan) or bread crumbs
  • 3 tbsp Green coriander, chopped
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 1 medium Onion, finely sliced
  • 6-8 Curry leaves
  • 1 large Tomato, chopped
  • 1 1/5 tsp Salt
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar
Spice paste:
  • 8 Kashmiri chilies
  • 2 tsp Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 8 Black peppercorns
  • 1/2 tsp Poppy seeds
  • 5 Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 3/4 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 6 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 Ginger, minced
  • 1 1/4 Coconut, grated

Preparation

  • For the spice paste, grind all the ingredients mentioned with a little water to a smooth paste
  • Grind the meat with 3 tbsp of the spice paste till smooth. Add the Bengal gram flour or bread crumbs slices of bread, green coriander and ½ tsp salt; mix well. Make meat balls about 1” size
  • Heat the oil in a large pan; saute the onion till soft and golden brown
  • Add the curry leaves and the remaining spice paste; stir-fry for a few minutes
  • Add the tomato and saute for a few minutes until soft and oil begins to separate
  • Add 2 cups water and bring the mixture to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes
  • Drop the meat balls in carefully and cook for 10 minutes or until cooked
  • Add the vinegar and cook for 2 minutes. Adjust seasoning if needed
  • Remove from heat
  • Serve with hot white rice or Arroz com Coco (Coconut rice)
