Boiled Fish in White Sauce (Peixe Cozido com Molho Branco)

  • 4 Black peppercorns
  • 2 tsp Vinegar
  • 1 qty. White Sauce
  • 1 lb any fleshy fish
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1 Onion, medium, finely chopped
  • 1 Tomato, medium, finely chopped
  • 5 Garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 Ginger, chopped
White Sauce:
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tsp Flour
  • 1 cup Milk or half and half
  • Salt and Pepper to taste


  • White sauce preparation: Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan over slow fire. Add flour and stir for few minutes, do not let it get dark. Gradually add milk or half and half. Stir continuously until a smooth sauce is formed. Add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside
  • Clean and cut the fish into desired pieces or leave whole. Apply salt and keep aside
  • Heat oil and stir-fry all the chopped ingredients till onion is tender
  • Add fish, and just enough water to allow the fish to boil
  • Add peppercorns and vinegar
  • Cook till fish is done
  • Serve with White Sauce
